Scope and content:

A collection of business, military, political, and personal correspondence of George B. McClellan, chiefly letters written by him. The largest portion of the collection consists of 22 letters from McClellan to Edward Henry Wright and covers the period from 1863 to 1885. Other correspondents include J. E. Peyton, David Hunter, John Van Buren, William H. Aspinwall, Robert Patterson, and others. Also included are a few letters by McClellan's wife Ellen Mary Marcy McClellan.

Biographical / historical:

George B. McClellan (1826-1885) was an American military officer who served as the Commanding General of the United States Army from November 1861 to March 1862 during the American Civil War. McClellan was the 1864 Democratic presidential candidate who lost to Abraham Lincoln. He also served as the 24th governor of New Jersey from 1878 to 1881.
