Background

Scope and content:

James Edward Glazier's Civil War experience is reflected in his letters to his parents, brother Charles, and friend Annie G. Monroe. He details his training in Annapolis, Maryland, Burnside's Expedition to the Carolinas, and his work in the hospital. A letter from his brother Ezra deals with religious aspects of the Civil War. In his diaries after the Civil War, Glazier writes about farming on the Pacific Coast from 1868 to 1882, his work, expenses, family news, social life, including Fourth of July celebrations, tent revivals, and the reunion of the 23rd Massachusetts Regiment in 1888.

Biographical / historical:

James Edward Glazier (1834-1920), of Salem, Massachusetts, was a private in Company F of the 23rd Regiment of Massachusetts Infantry. The regiment was organized in October 1861 and was attached to the special division organized by General Ambrose Burnside for the expedition in the Carolinas. Glazier took part in military operations from October 1861 to April 1864, including the Battle of New Bern, the Battle of Resaca, the expedition against Charleston, and duty at New Bern and Getty Station. In May 1864, Glazier was detailed as a nurse and assistant to the chaplain in the U.S. General Hospital at Hampton, Virginia, where he remained until mid-September 1864. He was mustered out in October 1864. After leaving the service, Glazier studied theology and entered the ministry of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In April 1865, he moved to Ukiah, California, where he farmed and occasionally worked as a bricklayer and plasterer. He married Mary Odell in February 1868, and they had at least 8 children. In June 1881, after his wife's death, he returned to Salem. He spent a year there looking for work, and in 1882, left for Florida. Having spent three years in Tallahassee, in September 1885 he returned to Ukiah. In 1893, he married Martha B. Powers. Glazier died in August 1920.
