The artificial collection consists of ephemera pertaining to the state of California and each of its counties, excluding the City and County of San Francisco, collected by the San Francisco History Center, San Francisco Public Library. Dating from 1850 to present day, the collection includes ephemera created by or related to businesses; government agencies; infrastructure and transit systems; historic buildings, landmarks, and museums; schools, colleges, and universities; civic associations and activist groups; clubs and societies, labor unions; auditoriums and theaters; hotels and resorts; festivals and fairs; sporting events; hospitals, sanatoriums, prisons, and orphanages; elections, ballot measures, and political parties; geographic features; churches; and other subjects.

Dating from 1850 to present day, the collection includes ephemera created by or related to businesses; government agencies; infrastructure and transit systems; historic buildings, landmarks, and museums; schools, colleges, and universities; civic associations and activist groups; clubs and societies, labor unions; auditoriums and theaters; hotels and resorts; festivals and fairs; sporting events; hospitals, sanatoriums, prisons, and orphanages; elections, ballot measures, and political parties; geographic features; churches; and other subjects.

Types of ephemera include: advertisements; brochures; folders; programs; leaflets; pamphlets; announcements; guides; maps; tickets; invitations; newsletters; constitutions and bylaws; surveys and reports; directories and listings; fliers; catalogues; journals and journal articles; and newspaper clippings.

Biographical / historical:

The collection was collected and assembled by the San Francisco History Center, San Francisco Public Library. The creation of the collection and the selection process focused on significant 19th and 20th century California subjects in California history. The collection includes multiple accessions and donations acquired.

Collected by the San Francisco Public Library and the San Francisco History Center from various sources, including donations and purchases.

The collection is arranged in two series: Series 1: California Counties and Series 2: California Subjects

Files in series 1 (Counties) are arranged alphabetically by county. Within each county, files are arranged alphabetically by place (i.e., San Jose) or topical heading (i.e., maps).

Files in series 2 (Subjects) are arranged alphabetically by topical heading. Names of associations and parks are nested under the topical heading.

Physical location:
Open for research. The collection is offsite and advance notice is required for retrieval. Material must be requested at least 4 business days in advance of visit.

The collection is open for research and available for use during San Francisco History Center hours. Photographs are available during Photo Desk hours. This collection must be requested at least 4 business days in advance of visit.
