Collection of 918 color slides by James A. Martin documenting events, locations and civic life in San Francisco, 1965-1968. One third of the collection documents Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) construction, mostly on Market Street but also includes Alameda County and Contra Costa County locations, as well as the transbay tube construction at Bethlehem Shipyard. Locations include San Francisco Airport, Lake Merced, San Francisco Public Library’s Main Library and branches, Hall of Justice, Chinatown, Stonestown, Fisherman’s Wharf, Golden Gate Park, Japanese Tea Garden, Fleishhacker Pool, San Francisco SPCA - Animal Shelter, San Francisco Art Institute, Hyde Street Pier at San Francisco Maritime State Historic Park, Legion of Honor, San Francisco City Hall. Martin also documented classroom instruction and field trips for a San Francisco Unified School District elementary school, in addition to the activities and work of the San Francisco Police Department, San Francisco Fire Department, United States Coast Guard, San Francisco Planning Department, Board of Supervisors, California Highway Patrol. Locations outside of San Francisco include Mt. Tamalpais and Muir Woods.

James Andrew Martin was born on March 16, 1929 to Blanche Marie Heminger and Benjamin Martin in San Francisco, California. Martin attended Sacred Heart High School. In 1958 Martin married Doris H Schied. Martin was full-time teacher and administrator and an amateur photographer. Much of his photography was used as instructional content for the San Francisco Unified School District. Martin photographed weddings and parties and took the faculty photos for his school’s yearbooks, often developing the images in a home darkroom. James Andrew Martin died on December 22, 2019 in San Francisco, California.
