Scope and content:

Collection consists of photocopies of letters by Dunbar Rowland relating to the "reform" movement within the American Historical Association, from 1914 to 1915, which was directed against the so-called "Big-University Trust." The bulk of the letters are from Rowland to fellow historian, Frederic Bancroft.

Biographical / historical:

Dunbar Rowland was born in August 1864. He was an author, historian, scholar, and director of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. Rowland was a member of several professional societies for historians, including the American Historical Association; he was an active member of its Conference of Historical Societies from its foundation in 1904 and of its Conference of Archivists from 1909. He was a leader in the Mississippi Valley Historical Association, of which he and other regional archivists and historians had been the founder in 1907. Dunbar Rowland helped create the Mississippi state archives. He died in November 1937.
