    Biographical / Historical

    Lionel Stevenson (1902-1973) was a Canadian author who taught at the University of Southern California from 1937 to 1955. He later was a Professor of English Literature at Duke University. Stevenson's work included biographies of George Meredith, Charles Lever, and William Makepeace Thackeray.

    Scope and Contents

    This collection consists of two typescripts of the "The Ordeal of George Meredith," a biography by Lionel Stevenson (1902-1973) published by Charles Scribner's Sons in 1953. There is an early typescript draft, annotated with the author's handwritten corrections (Folders 1-8) and a revised final version (Folders 9-26), with handwritten printer and editor marks.
    The early draft is arranged in folders based roughly on how the text later appears in chapters in the final version.
