Background

Scope and content:

The Corporal Roger A. McNew Letters (August 1978; circa 1970s) contains eight letters; one unauthored essay entitled "The Sailor", a speakeasy business card, and "Marine Corps Air Station Football Team" document. All of the letters, except for one, are from Roger to his mother. In these letters he discusses his time in the United States Marine Corps while stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Biographical / historical:

Roger Allan McNew (January 9 1959-September 17, 1978) was born in Omaha, Nebraska to Dona Lee McNew (1936 - 2002) and Hobert James McNew (1937 - 2009). Roger McNew was a corporal in the United States Marine Corps and was a member of Headquarters Battery, 5th Battalion, Tenth Marines. He was stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. McNew drowned while swimming at West Onslow Beach and was pronounced dead on arrival at Onslow Memorial Hospital.
