Biographical / historical:

Michael Peter Smith received his B.A. in Political Science from St. Michael's College (1964), M.A. in Political Science from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst (1966), and Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst (1971).

Smith served as Instructor/Assistant Professor of Government at Dartmouth College (1968-1971), Assistant Professor of Political Science at Boston University (1971-1974), Associate Professor/Professor of Political Science at Tulane University (1974-1986), Professor of Community Studies and Development at the University of California, Davis (1986-2008), and Distinguished Professor, Community Studies and Development, University of California, Davis (2008-2010). He retired from UC Davis in 2010.
