Scope and content:

The collection contains records created and kept by the City of Sacramento's Board of Health. It is divided into two series:

Series 1. Emergency Hospital records, 1918-1971. This series is made up of records from the Sacramento Emergency Hospital and includes daily registers of cases received and treated from 1937 to 1971, monthly statistics for types and numbers of cases and surgeries from 1924 to 1959, and nurse time books.

Series 2. Minutes, reports, statistics, and other records, ca. 1862-1954. This series contains various board of health records, including meeting minutes; charts of cases of and deaths from various diseases, accidents, and suicides in Sacramento; records from the city's Committee on Influenza during the 1918 influenza pandemic; reports on medical refugees from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake who were treated at Fort Sutter; and records of deaths and internments in the city.

Biographical / historical:

The City of Sacramento's Board of Health was created in 1862 to oversee public health in the city and the city's public hospital.

Acquisition information:
Transferred from the City of Sacramento in 1978 and Sacramento Public Library in 1986 (accessions 1978/031 and 1986/136).
