Background

Scope and content:

The Linda S. Bridge California Nurses Association Collection primarily consists of materials used in the unionization of registered nurses at Glendale Memorial Hospital and Health Center, ensuing contract negotiations, and the implementation of those contracts. There is also a small amount of material that includes statewide union initiatives. Materials include articles, California Nurses Association membership packet and union information, the California Nurses Association nurse representative manual and information, correspondence, grievances, notes, pamphlets and working papers. The collection has been organized into two series: California Nurses Association Organization Papers (2001-2007), and California Nurses Association Representative Papers (1987-2007).

Series I, California Nurses Association Organization Papers, documents the state-wide nurses association and includes the articles of incorporation and by-laws of California Nurses Association, agreements between California Nurses Association and Catholic Healthcare West hospitals in California, and other materials concerning state-wide union initiatives, such as Nurses versus Arnold. The original titles have been kept and the folders are arranged alphabetically.

Series II, California Nurses Association Representative Papers, documents Ms. Bridge's role as a Nurse Representative of the California Nurses Association. Materials include the California Nurses Association nurse representative manual and conference information as well as negotiation material and contract agreements between Catholic Healthcare West/Glendale Memorial Hospital and Health Center and Caregiver and Healthcare Employees Union. Other records include case management policies and procedures, and Glendale Memorial Hospital and Health Center grievances. The original titles have been kept and the folders are arranged alphabetically.

Biographical / historical:

At Glendale Memorial Hospital (GMHHC) in mid-2000 the California Nurses Association (CNA) had their organizers stationed outside each of the GMHHC employee entrances. As the Registered Nurses left the facility at the end of their shifts various organizers approached us to ask if we would be interested in unionizing and joining CNA.

For six months CNA worked hard to organize GMHHC. The Union was in the process of organizing a number of Catholic Healthcare West (CHW) facilities. At this point Saint Bernadine's in San Bernardino was going to have its vote first The Union won by a large margin. GMHHC's vote was taken shortly thereafter. But it was won only by the narrowest of margins – 51%. There was a vote of the membership electing the negotiating team to represent them with the `first contract' negotiators for CNA. Linda Bridge and four others were elected. CHW and CNA corporate leadership agreed to not have a major fight in order to establish a first contract. With this agreement only eleven meetings were required to develop GMHHC's first contract that was to last 2 ½ years.

In 2003 Bridge was elected one of three negotiators for GMHHC. Negotiating this contract was different from the first one in as much as ½ of it was accepted from the negotiated contracts of CHW facilities in Northern California. The other ½ of the contract were items that were facility specific. As a Nurse Representative Bridge helped both the RN's and management of the Maternal-Child Health department learn the contract and its application to our nursing responsibilities.
