Background

Scope and content:

The collection contains scrapbooks for the years 1953-1977, 1981, and 1983-1988 (vol. 1-24, 26, and 28-35). The majority of scrapbooks (1961 through 1977) are each devoted to documenting auditions and performances within a single year of activity, mostly in the form of newspaper clippings, photographs, and performance programs. Later volumes combine two years of activity; two volumes contain materials encompassing multi-year periods. The compiler of each scrapbook is only occasionally credited. This collection does not contain administrative records of the Association.

Biographical / historical:

The Junior Bach Festival Association is a non-profit organization incorporated in 1953 under the laws of the State of California by directors Tirzah Mailkoff, Marguerite P. Taylor, and James Todorovic. Their goal is to foster an appreciation of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach in the San Francisco Bay Area by artists under the age of 21 through performance of an annual series of concerts.

Custodial history:

Acquired January 2016 from John Mark of Oakland, CA, Communications Secretary of the Association in 2015, donated through Hackenberg Booksellers, El Cerrito, CA. Two additional scrapbooks were added January 2017.
