Biographical / Historical
Private Elmo Shubael Culbert, American Expeditionary Force (5/21/1887 - 10/29/1957) was born in Kelseyville, California to
William Culbert. He married Emeline Crompton Bean on June 23, 1909, in Ogden, Utah. He was honorably dishcharged from the
Army on December 6, 1918. He died in Salt Lake City, Utah, at the age of 70.

This collection contains correspondence from Pvt. Elmo Culbert, USA to his wife in Salt Lake City, Utah, during the First
World War. A large majority of the letters include expressing feelings for his wife and how much he missed her, while going
through military training. In one of the letters Culbert described to his wife a coffee factory explosion where 25 girls were
killed. There is also a telegram dated October 22, 1922 mentioning the death of a mother (unsure if Culbert's mother or someone
else's).
