Certificates, receipts, and letters relating to Ralph Mann's service with the Southern Pacific Railroad and his membership in the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.

Biographical / historical:

Ralph W. Mann was born on Feb. 23, 1882, to Lewis W and Julia [Evans] Mann in Stuart, Iowa. He married Elsie Pearl Diffendarder [1880-1972] on Nov. 22, 1915. Their son, Ralph Gordon Mann, was born on June 20, 1920, in Winnemucca, Nevada. According to the 1920, 1930, 1940 and 1950 census records, Mann was a locomotive engineer. According to his WWI Draft Registration card, he was employed as a locomotive engineer for the Southern Pacific in Oakland, California on the Oakland Pier. Also, according to his draft registration card, the "W" in his name does not stand for anything. Mann was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, Division 283. He passed away on Jan. 18, 1970, and is buried in the Chapel of the Chimes Columbarium and Mausoleum in Oakland, Alameda County, California.
