Biographical / historical:

The Golden State Gay Rodeo Association (GSGRA) San Diego Chapter is a member of the International Gay Rodeo Association (IGRA). The annual event hosted in San Diego is called the San Diego Gay Rodeo, which was founded in 1987 and remains a part of GSGRA today. The International Gay Rodeo Association is a charity organization, and the San Diego Gay Rodeo raises funds to support local organizations. The organizations they fundraise for are focused on the LGBTQ+ community. The mission of the San Diego Gay Rodeo is to "educate and foster it's members to become proficient and professional individuals… [and] to be a support organization within the community and surrounding areas, barring all prejudices with regards to gender, national origin, sexual orientation, religion, race, age, or disability".1

The event was hosted annually in Lakeside, CA located in San Diego County between the years of 1989 and 2010. San Diego Gay Rodeo took a hiatus until 2023 when the organization announced that the event would be back in 2026 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first gay rodeo held in 1976 in Reno, Nevada. This original event in Reno was a fundraiser for providing Thanksgiving dinners to the local elderly population in need.

The first nine years of gay rodeos in the United States came before the formation of the International Gay Rodeo Association. The umbrella organization was later founded in 1985 with the objective of standardizing rules and regulations, as well as defining goals. IGRA was formed by convening four different regional associations located in Arizona, Colorado, California, and Texas. The 50th anniversary event was planned for October 2025 in Reno, Nevada with the theme "Road to Fifty", which the San Diego Gay Rodeo organization was invited to.
