Abstract: Hugh Johnson
(1939-present) is a British writer and expert on wine. This
collection of his papers includes handwritten and typescript
manuscripts, research files, correspondence related to several of
Mr. Johnson's books on wine, drafts of many of his articles,
correspondence and notes on his publications and related
projects, and a set of press clippings and scrapbooks documenting
his early work.

Biography
Hugh Johnson (1939-present) is a British writer and expert on
wine. Mr. Johnson has been writing on wine since the 1960s,
beginning as a feature writer for Condé Nast Publications and
soon after becoming editor of Wine and Food magazine and wine
correspondent for "The Sunday Times". He is the author of dozens
of books on wine, an enthusiastic wine historian, and promoter of
wines from all areas of the world.

1976: Founded the Zinfandel Club
1986-2001: Director, Bordeaux First Growth Chateau Latour
1990: Co-founder, Royal Tokaji Wine Company

2004: Officer in the French Order Nationale du Mérite
2007: Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE)

Scope and Content
The Hugh Johnson Archives include handwritten and typescript
manuscripts, research files, and correspondence related to
several of Mr. Johnson's books on wine, notably "Vintage: the
Story of Wine" and "The World Atlas of Wine." The collection also
includes drafts of many of his articles, correspondence and notes
on his publications and related projects, a set of press
clippings and scrapbooks documenting his early work, and menus
from various events.
Processing Information
This collection was processed by intern Rachelle Caouette
under the direction of Processing Archivist Liz Phillips and with
the assistance of cataloger Jennifer Edmonson. UK-based archivist
Richard Taylor performed the initial assessment and wrote the
folder descriptions. Later accruals to the collection were
processed by Liz Phillips.
