Young Woman's Diary, 1937

Collection context

Summary

Title:
Young Woman's Diary
Dates:
1937
Abstract:
This is the page-a-day diary of a young school-age woman. She kept entries from Sunday June 27, 1937 to Sunday October 10, 1937. Based on the mention of the cities of Concord, Laconia, Camptom and Tilton she likely lived in New Hampshire. There is also a cash balance sheet in back listing expenses such as film tickets, soap, tissues, church, and ribbon. The entries cover her summer and the beginning of her school year, and generally talk about her daily activities. Topics include visits with family members, chores, music lessons, glee club, choir, class work, taking care of a baby named David (possibly her little brother), camp, and the death of "Nan" (likely her grandmother). Notably, this young girl talks about developing a crush and falling "more and more in love" with an older woman who seems to be her caretaker while her mom is away for the summer, or perhaps her music teacher, or both.
