Background

Scope and content:

The Edson Smith Photograph collection contains nearly 3100 early images of Santa Barbara County dating from the 1870s-1940s, many of which were collected by Santa Barbara native, and long-time resident, Edson A. Smith (1877-1947). The photographs capture historic buildings, adobes, houses, views of State Street, cultural landmarks, local dignitaries, and many events including early Fiesta parades, the arrival of the first Southern Pacific train in Santa Barbara in 1887, and the Santa Barbara Earthquake on June 29, 1925.

Acquisition information:
Gift of the Santa Barbara Public Library, 2019. Many of these photographs were digitized for online viewing by the Santa Barbara Public Library, with funding for the project provided by John C. Woodward.
Processing information:

Photographs have been arranged into boxes consecutively, by identification. Box labels include the number range contained within each box. This number range is recorded in the finding aid in the basic information subrecord. Files have been arranged by box.

Oversize photographs have been removed into flat boxes. The idenfication numbers of these photographs have been indicated on box labels, as well as in the finding aid in the file-level note subrecord. Some negatives were removed for cold storage. The identification numbers of these negatives have been indicated on box labels, as well as in the finding aid in the file-level note subrecord.
