Scope and content:

Photographs and negatives. Studio portraits of Los Angeles citizens and family members, including people prominent in the community. Mostly negatives only, some original prints. See also Gen. Col. 1107 containing order books from Steckel's studio.

Biographical / historical:

Source: Biographies of Western Photographers by Carl Mautz: Born in Allenton, Pennsylvania, December 20, 1864. Worked in a photographic parlor in Philadelphia, 1877-78; operated his own parlor in Allenton, ca. 1878-82; in real estate business in Kansas City, ca. 1882-88. Partner in photographic studio in Los Angeles with Lamson, opposite the Hollenbeck Hotel, 1888-90; opened his own gallery, 1890. Located at 220 South Spring Street, 1896; 336 1/2 South Broadway, 1905-20s.
