Background

Scope and content:

Bill W. Jones, a gay single man, adopted his son Aaron Hunter Jones on February 13, 1969 through the San Francisco City and County Social Services Adoption Agency. Jones and his story received significant press coverage following the adoption. In 2022, Jones published his memoir titled, “Bachelor Father: The First Single Man to Legally Adopt a Child in America.” The collection includes materials related to the organization Gay Fathers, a DVD copy of the Phil Donahue Show May 1985, ephemera related to Jones’ memoir, and a copy of the book.
