Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains five printed emails written by 1stSgt. Hal C. Stott, Utah National Guard and Melissa Stott to each other and family during the Iraq War. Also included is one photocopy an article in the Sanpete Messenger from Manti, UT discussing "News from the 145th" about Stott and Major Steve Brenchley with whom he served overseas.

Three of the correspondence were from Hal to family and his wife, whom he calls "Mitzi." These emails were forwarded from Melissa to the donor, Debbie Glazier who is Hal's sister.

The other two were from Melissa to family shortly before and shortly after Hal returned home to Fort Bliss from his deployment in Iraq. One of Hal's letters describes arriving at a prison camp in Baghdad, having left from Camp Buehring in northern Kuwait.

Biographical / historical:

First Sergeant Hal C. Stott, Utah National Guard (b. 8/12/1955) was born in Manti, Utah and graduated Manti High School in 1973 and attended Salt Lake Technical College for drafting before serving a mission to New Zealand for the Church of Latter Day Saints. He joined the Utah National Guard out of high school, along with his two older brothers. He and his wife Melissa had daughters before he was sent to serve with the 145th Field Artillery Unit in Iraq at 52 years old. He retired in 2009.
