Samuel Hopkins (1721-1803) was an American clergyman theologian, abolitionist, and founder of the theological movement Hopkinsianism. He graduated from Yale in 1741 and later studied with American theologian Jonathan Edwards for two years. Afterwards Hopkins settled at Housatonic, Massachusetts (later Great Barrington). In 1769, the privatization of his congregation and an opposition to his intransigent doctrine led to his dismissal. He then accepted a position at the First Congregational Church at Newport, Rhode Island, where he remained until his death in 1803.
