A collection of 13 letters from Jeremiah C. Garthwaite to his brother Jacob Thomas Garthwaite (1808-1859). The letters are long and detailed and give Garthwaite's impressions of New Orleans, Louisiana, St. Louis, Missouri, Charleston, North Carolina, and Vicksburg, Mississippi, among other locations. In the letters, he discusses national, state, and local politics, as well as the business and social life of the early 1830s in the South. The letters shed new light on the history of Louisiana, Kentucky, and Mississippi between the Nullification Crisis and the 1837 Panic.

Jeremiah Crane Garthwaite (1807-1883) was born in Newark, New Jersey, the son of a Revolutionary War veteran. In the 1830s Garthwaite moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, and was a partner in a wholesale clothing business which was dissolved in 1860.
