Scope and content:

Including over 15,000 bookplates, the collection is currently arranged in groupings such as subject, place, ownership, previous collector, artist/designer, etc. Included is the second oldest known bookplate, a 15th century German manuscript, as well as specific collections of American presidents, authors, famous actors and actresses, royalty, etc. Also included are reference files and correspondence with dealers and collectors. The Swarth collection contains the bookplates and correspondence of other major bookplate collectors, including the Edith Emerson Spencer collection of royal and related bookplates, the Anne Hadden collection, the Olive Percival collection of framed bookplates, and the collections of Clare R. Talbot and Alan W. Hazelton.
