Background
The Cotia colony in
Brazil was founded in 1962 through a collaboration between Japanese and Brazilian agricultural organizations. The idea originated
in 1957 during a visit by a Japanese representative to a Brazilian agricultural cooperative. Negotiations between Japan and
Brazil established a division of labor:
Brazil would provide land and training, while Japan would recruit and transport immigrants and handle marketing. Due to difficulties,
the initial plan of bringing 300 families from Japan fell short. Ultimately, only 134 families came directly from Japan, with
an additional 31 recruited locally.
