Background
- Scope and content:
-
The collection is composed of computer print-outs of diaries, printed matter, and other assorted papers. The Guatapara Japanese settlement was a Japanese government arranged postwar settlement in Brazil. Many families re-immigrated from Manchuria to Brazil via Japan after WWII.
- Biographical / historical:
-
The Cotia colony in Brazil was founded in 1962 through a collaboration between Japanese and Brazilian agricultural organizations. The idea originated in 1957 during a visit by a Japanese representative to a Brazilian agricultural cooperative. Negotiations between Japan and Brazil established a division of labor: Brazil would provide land and training, while Japan would recruit and transport immigrants and handle marketing. Due to difficulties, the initial plan of bringing 300 families from Japan fell short. Ultimately, only 134 families came directly from Japan, with an additional 31 recruited locally.
