Background

Scope and content:

The collection consists of an assortment of publications from various sources covering women's liberation, the feminist movement, and the gay rights movement. Many of the publications are intersectional in nature and concern race, sexuality, and gender along with other social movements of the 1960s through the 1990s. Series 1 includes publications of various sorts including newsletters, pamphlets, zines, journals, magazines, and directories. Series 2 includes programs, advertisements, and other guides for specific events or programs in the LGBTQ+ community, including Pride, the Gay Games, and drag performances. Both series focus on the San Francisco Bay Area, but do include materials from the rest of the United States.

Acquisition information:
Exact origins of the collection is unknown. Some materials were given to Stanford from the Gay and Lesbian Historical Society of Northern California; others likely were pulled out of other collections and donations. Many of the publications are addressed to feminist and gay rights activists Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon, as well as feminist bookstores in the Bay Area.
Processing information:

The collection was assembled from multiple sources and generally does not include complete runs of publications; volume numbers and year of publication in the finding aid are the range covered by the individual issues in the collection.

Arrangement:

Series 1 includes general publications; Series 2 includes programs and guides for specific events. Both series are organized alphabetically by title.

Physical location:
Special Collections and University Archives materials are stored offsite and must be paged 36 hours in advance.
