Baxter was foreman of Central Pacific's track-laying gang during the construction of the trancontinental railroad. He poses here with the hammer used to drive the golden spike at Promontory Point, Utah as well as the shovel used to turn the first earth in Sacramento.

Scope and Contents

This group of negatives was pulled from several collections for preservation purposes, which at the time (early 1990s?) meant the creation of duplicate negatives & interpositives. These had been assigned the call number MSS PHOTO 0192 which is now deprecated. Note that some of the collection identifications may be incorrect.
