Background
- Scope and content:
-
This collection is comprised of railroad operating agreements dating from 1899-1912, between Southern Pacific Railroad and other railroads in the United States. Operating agreements are between the Southern Pacific and the following railroads: Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, Atlanta and West Point Railroad, Chicago and Northwestern Railway, Hanford and Summit Lake Railway, Los Angeles Pacific Railroad, Pacific Electric Railway, San Francisco and North Pacific, Southern Railway, Western Railway, and Yosemite Valley Railroad.
Railroad operating agreements are necessary for projects that interact with railroads. They can cover a range of topics, including: Trackage rights which are agreements between railroads where one railroad company is granted the right to use the tracks of another railroad company. These agreements can be short-term or long-term, and may or may not be exclusive. Haulage agreements which are agreements where one railroad company provides service for another railroad company. For example, one railroad company may provide single-line service for another railroad company to transport auto parts between manufacturers and assembly plants. Network operating agreements which are agreements that outlines the terms and conditions for how a network customer will operate its facilities.
