- Biographical / historical:

The Black Panther Party, originally the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, was a Marxist–Leninist and black power political organization founded by college students Bobby Seale and Huey P. Newton in October 1966 in Oakland, California. Originally focused on combating police brutality and organizing security patrols in local neighborhoods, Black Panther membership quickly grew to to advocate for other social reforms. Their initiatives included campaigning for prison reform, holding voter registration drives, organizing free food programs, opening free health clinics, and creating community "Freedom" or "Liberation" schools.
