The collection consists of letters between various family members of Los Angeles attorney Lewis Augustus Groff. Most of the letters are by Lewis A. Groff and his wife, Mary, to their son, Gregory Groff, who was stricken with typhoid fever in Omaha. The letters describe family news and discuss Gregory's illness, and there is also some description of Santa Catalina Island, California.

Lewis Augustus Groff (1841-1928) was a prominent Los Angeles attorney. He was born in Wooster, Ohio in December 1841. He held various positions as an attorney including Commissioner of the Land Office in Arizona, Postmaster of Los Angeles in 1900, and the first Dean of the Law College at the University of Southern California. He was married to Mary Ellen Gregory Groff. Groff died in Los Angeles in 1928.
