The Sam Green papers document the work and life of documentary filmmaker Sam Green and includes material regarding The Weather Underground, Rainbow Man/John 3:16, The Love Song of R. Buckminster Fuller, and many of his other film projects. The collection primarily consists of material that depict elements of Green's filmmaking process, including scripts and film treatments, research material and interviews conducted with documentary subjects. The audiovisual series contains original film reels with footage used in Green's films, digital film transfers, and other forms of magnetic media including VHS tapes and audiocassettes. The collection also contains correspondence, notebooks, promotional items, computer media, photographs, clippings, and ephemera.

Sam Green is an independent documentary filmmaker who has been making work since the mid 1990s. He studied documentary film at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism where he was a student of filmmaker Marlon Riggs. He has made several films that feature Bay Area history and culture, and has been included in the Whitney Biennial as well as nominated for an Oscar.

Series 2 (Notebooks) and two MacBook laptops from Series 4 (Born-digital) are closed until 2050.
Born-digital material is closed until processed. The rest of the collection is open for research. Note that material must be requested at least 3 business days in advance of intended use.
Audiovisual materials are not available in original format, and must be reformatted to a digital use copy.
