The collection comprises two cartons containing field notes and interviews with nursing students and faculty from the 'Nursing Careers' project, led by Virginia L. Olesen and Elvi Whittaker. The study explored the experiences of nursing students, with materials dating from 1960 to 1971.

Elvi Whittaker, PhD, Professor Emerita, University of British Columbia, was one of three researchers in UCSF SON working on a study of the class of 1963. The project team consisted of Fred Davis, the project director, Virginia Olesen, and Elvi Whittaker. The project was partly formulated by Anselm Strauss and came to be known as "The Nursing Careers" project. It produced some dozen papers and a book, The Silent Dialogue. Funding was from the Nursing Resources Division of the US Public Health Service (NU00024) and allowed three years of field work and some years of comparative and other work following that. This collection contains the field notes and interviews that were part of the study.
