Miscellaneous business correspondence and papers of Oliver Ames. The letters, chiefly addressed to Ames, deal with the sale of stock, railroad mergers, etc. Included are items relating to the Union Pacific Railroad; Central Branch of the Union Pacific Railroad; Union Pacific Railway Company; Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway Company; New Orleans, Mobile and Texas Railroad Company; and a brokerage firm Pickering & Mosely. The papers also deal with the estate of Oliver Ames and his father Oakes Ames. There is also correspondence by American financier Samuel Carr.

Oliver Ames (1831-1895) was an American businessman and the Governor of Massachusetts from 1887 to 1890. He was the son of American businessman and U.S. Representative, Oakes Ames (1804-1873), and nephew of Oliver Ames (1807-1877), the President of Union Pacific Railroad Company. In 1873, he was named as one of the executors of his father's estate. Ames was on the Board of the Union Pacific from 1874 to 1877 and served as a board member and director of several industrial companies, banks, and railroads, including the New Orleans, Mobile, and Texas Railroad Company, and Central Branch of the Union Pacific Railroad Company.
