Photographic prints: selections made by photographer as representative of entire project. An extensive survey of contemporary California Native American groups with emphasis on festivals and other gatherings which demonstrate the preservation and/or revival of traditional cultures. Photographs document tribal ceremonies and other activities such as dancing, singing and preparing food; traditional regalia; baskets and other examples of material culture; ceremonial structures; regional environments; and other subjects. Includes many individual and group portraits. Includes documentation of the following tribes and locations: Yurok, Hoopa (Hupa), Pomo, Maidu, Kule Loklo Village, Museum of the American Indian, Yosemite Valley Indian Village, Indian Grinding Rock State Park (Miwok), Tuolumne Me-Wuk, Ohlone, Chumash, Santa Rosa Band of Cahuilla Indians, Malki Museum and Morongo Reservation (Morongo Band of Mission Indians), Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, Torres Martinez Destert Cahuilla, Dorothy Ramone Learning Center, Pala Band of Mission Indians, and the Colorado River Indian Tribes Reservation (CRIT). Also includes documentation of the following events: California Indian Storytellling Festival, California Indian Basketweavers Association gatherings, Elders Day Gathering (California Indian Museum, Sacramento), California Indian Conference, Language Is Life Conference, Native American Environmental Conference, Lowell Bean Symposia, Salmon Aid, Alcatraz Island 40th Anniversary, and Indigenous Peoples Day (American Indian Movement). Among the individuals depicted are Katherine Siva Saubel, Julia Parker, Lowell Bean, Desmond "Merkie" Oliver, David Gensaw, Ernest Siva and Bill Means. Also includes an album compiled by the photographer featuring portraits of Katherine Siva Saubel. Also includes photographs of casinos affilliated with the aforementioned tribes and other groups throughout California. Also includes the photographer's research files for the project. Digital files, currently unprocessed, contain entirety of images taken during project.
