Biographical / historical:

Henry Mathews was Secretary of James Lick Estate from 1876 to 1895 and was primarily responsible for the disposition of Lick's $3,000,000 estate for 19 years until the trust was discharged.

Mathews was born Feb 26, 1840 near Metamora, IL. He came to California at the age of 12. After finishing school he went to work for his father's farm products distribution firm, EG Mathews and Co in San Francisco. In 1875 he opened HE Mathews Stationery in San Francisco. He was a life member of the Masonic Society and an honorary member of the Society of California Pioneers
