John B. Goodman III (1901 - 1991) was an amateur historian who spent twenty years researching and writing about the hundreds of ships that sailed from the east coast of the United States to California during the Gold Rush.
Goodman's major unpublished work, was his monumental California Gold Rush Fleet Encyclopedia of Vessels Sailing from the East Coast of the United States and Canada for San Francisco, December 7, 1848 - December 31, 1849. This eleven volume compilation, twenty one years in preparation, supported by eight volumes of addenda, extends to some 5,000 manuscript pages. Comprised of individual histories of 762 ships in alphabetical order, it records a broad spectrum of information derived from many and diverse sources about the multitude of gold rush vessels. The encyclopedia and a separately published key to the work were left by him to the Huntington library in San Moreno, California at his death, on the eve of his 90th birthday. This collection is a copy of twenty-two of these ship's cameo biographies.
