Background

Scope and content:

The Blue Andre Papers contain all records and documents created by Ms. Andre and her business associates in the course of developing story ideas and producing television movies. Series I contains bibles for all of her produced projects, which consist of pre-production documentation (research, story development notes, correspondence with writers, scripts, budgets, schedules, and contracts) and production documents (call sheets, cast and crew lists, production reports, and set photos). The titles represented are Rape and Marriage: The Rideout Case (1980); Wait Til Your Mother Gets Home (1983); Hobson’s Choice (1983); A Time to Live (1985); Unnatural Causes (1986); Christmas Comes to Willow Creek (1987); Pancho Barnes (1988); Fugitive Among Us (1992); Just Deserts (1992); Adrift (1993); While Justice Sleeps (1994); Picnic (2000); Video Voyeur: The Susan Wilson Story (2002); Identity Theft: The Michelle Brown Story (2004); Accidental Witness (2006). VHS tapes of all of these films are included. Pancho Barnes has the most material, followed by Hobson’s Choice. Series II contains records from dozens of projects in development that were never filmed. Many files contain research, contracts, correspondence regarding creative and business decisions, and scripts. Some projects are adaptations of novels but most of these potential movies revolve around real people and events whose stories were represented in the press and/or books: Duke Ellington, Clarence Hammond, private investigator John Dillman, union buster Martin Jay Levitt, Sherwood Forest and oil production during World War II, Jan Kemp and the University of Georgia athletics scandal, Walker Railey and Lucy Goodrich Papillon, Dayalan Sanders and the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, Lionel Dahmer, Adnan Awad, activists Robert Spitzer and Ronald Gold, Jimmy Buffet and many others. Series III contains general business records such as phone call logs, daily notebooks, extensive correspondence to and from Ms. Andre, her producer's employment contracts, and profit participation statements. Series IV consists of personal papers such as legal documents related to lawsuits, and family and personal correspondence, and keepsakes. There are hundreds of photos spanning all of Ms. Andre’s life, including her college activities, wedding, all through adulthood. There are also a few recorded interviews.

Biographical / historical:

Blue Andre was a television producer. Born Mary Everett in Galveston, Texas on December 18, 1943, she grew up in Atlanta, GA and the Mississippi Gulf Coast. She attended Biloxi HS and graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi earning a BA in Speech and Theater, intending to be a high school teacher. She was briefly married to David Andre, wed in 1965. Ms. Andre worked in a variety of production roles in New Orleans, learning the business, and formed a company, ARK II, that produced over 150 television commercials. She moved to the Los Angeles area in the 1970s and became a television film producer. She partnered with Vanessa Greene in 1978 and together they produced three television films. This partnership ended in 1983 and Ms. Andre formed her own company which would go on to partner with companies such as ITC Productions, IndieProd/Carolco Television, Atlantis, MTM Entertainment and others. An activist at heart, her productions included such moving stories as "Video Voyeur: The Susan Wilson Story", which led Blue to Washington where she met at the White House with Laura Bush to advocate for laws providing protection against video voyeurism. Her production of "Unnatural Causes" called to light the plight of Vietnam War veterans afflicted with illnesses resulting from exposure to Agent Orange and was previewed by Congress for permission to allow its release. Among her many other productions were the movies Identity Theft, Adrift, Pancho Barnes, Picnic, A Time To Live, Wait 'Til Your Mother Gets Home, Rape & Marriage: The Greta Rideout Case, Christmas Comes To Willow Creek, While Justice Sleeps, Fugitive Among Us, The Accidental Witness, Nightmare, and 13 episodes of The Big Easy TV series adaptation. Ms. Andre’s work earned multiple Emmy nominations, winning three awards. She was also honored with the Reel New Orleans Award for her tremendous commitment to creating opportunities for film in New Orleans. Mary "Blue" Andre passed away July 30, 2019 after a brief illness.
