Scope and content:

The collection consists of Hou's manuscripts on Chinese and Taiwanese economic development after 1949, his incomplete diaries between 1955 and 1996, research notes, photographs, and correspondence related to his activities as an academic teaching economics in Taiwanese universities after 1966, a politician working on the Taiwanese government's economic policy planning from the mid-1970s to the 1990s, and his service as an advisor to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Council for Economic Planning and Development, a ministerial organ under the Executive Yuan.

Biographical / historical:

Hou Chia-chu 侯家駒 (Hou Jiaju 侯家驹) (1928-2007) was born in Anhui Province, China. He joined the Nationalist Chinese Youth Army during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945) and retreated to Taiwan with the Youth Army in 1947. After obtaining a scholarship to study agricultural economy in Australia, he returned to Taiwan in 1966 and began teaching economics in Taiwanese universities. He was actively engaged in the Taiwanese government's economic policy planning and academic activities from the mid-1970s to the 1990s; he founded the Department of International Business at Soochow University (Taipei). He also served as an advisor to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Council for Economic Planning and Development, a ministerial organ under the Executive Yuan.
