Walter Kenrick Fisher (February 1, 1878 – November 2, 1953) stood as an American zoologist, evolutionary biologist, and adept illustrator and painter. His academic journey led him to Stanford University, where he made significant contributions.
Fisher's time with Stanford began in 1897. His educational path culminated in a succession of degrees: a Bachelor of Science (1901), a Master of Science (1903), and a Doctorate of Philosophy (1906). Progressing through the ranks, he joined the Stanford faculty as an Assistant Instructor in zoology in 1902, eventually attaining the position of Emeritus Professor in Zoology upon his retirement in 1943. His academic trajectory saw him rise from Full Instructor (1907) to Assistant Professor (1909) and ultimately to the esteemed role of Professor of Biology in 1925.
In 1918, during the winter, President Ray Lyman Wilbur appointed W. K. Fisher as the inaugural Director and full-time resident faculty member of Hopkins Marine Station. Fisher's appointment underscored President Wilbur's commitment to fostering taxonomical and systematic study of marine invertebrates within the seaside laboratory's teaching and research. Over the ensuing two decades, Fisher's notable contributions included teaching a class titled "The Classification and Ecology of Marine Invertebrates," often combined with offerings from fellow instructors such as Tage Skogsberg, George MacGinitie, and Rolf Bolin.
