Background

Scope and content:

The Opera libretti collection was assembled by UCSB music librarians as a vertical file research collection for studying opera. The libretti were published by a wide variety of publishers, primarily in the 20th century before the widespread availability of libretti and translations online. The libretti are sometimes in the original languages and sometimes in translation and many contain a synopsis, incipits, and in some cases are also a program. The collection is organized alphabetically by composer. Highlighted composers include Bach, Bizet, Beethoven, Debussy, Donizetti, Gluck, Mascagni, Mozart, Puccini, Rossini, Strauss, Gilbert + Sullivan, Verdi, and Wagner. Many were published by opera houses including the Metropolitan Opera, Chicago Civic Opera as well as houses in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and elsewhere. A full inventory can be found here: (Opera Libretti Inventory).
