Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains correspondence from PFC Manuel Fernandez, USAAF to Nellie and George during the Second World War. They seem to be family friends but this cannot be confirmed. The date of the letter is also unknown, but the donor stated that it was written during the Second World War.

The letterhead of the letter states that Fernandez is writing from the Flying Fortress School in Seattle, Washington. He apologizes to Nellie and George for losing their business, but he does not state what the business was. He says that he is studying the B -29, "the new super bomber" in school. He says, "I've got a slim chance to go to Yale and take a Flight Engineer's course, but even I don't go to Yale, I'm in a position to learn all about a plane that's going to be a model of Post War cargo planes and after this war I'll have a good chance for a good job." At the bottom of the letter on the third page he gives his address. It can be assumed that the acronym stands for Army Air Force Training Detachment- Army Air Force Western Technical Training Command, but the acronym A.A.F.T.D. has been hard to determine an accurate definition. It could be the case that Fernandez misspelled the acronym, giving the possibility that the acronym was supposed to be A.A.F.T.C. or Army Air Force Training Command or A.A.F.F.T.D. or Army Air Force Flying Training Detachment, but again this is speculation.
