Scope and content:

This collection contains digital and physical, such as prints, negatives, and slides, photographs by Santa Cruz Sentinel photographer Shmuel Thaler. These images document various locales and events in Santa Cruz County, California, including protests, marches, the Black Lives Matter movement, fires, such as the CZU Complex fires, political events, such as a Hillary Clinton campaign stop, storms and floods, and more.

This collection also includes negatives and slides, including images of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, prints from earlier in Thaler's career, and promotional material, such as postcards, exhibit materials, and calendars.

Biographical / historical:

Shmuel Thaler (1958-) is a photojournalist based in Santa Cruz, California who has been a staff photographer at the Santa Cruz Sentinel since 1987. Thaler moved to Santa Cruz in 1982 and worked as a photographer for Monterey Life, The Santa Cruz Express, and the Valley Press/Scotts Valley Banner before joining the Santa Cruz Sentinel. He also briefly worked for Photography Services at UC Santa Cruz. Thaler won three awards from the National Press Photographers Association Best of Photojournalism contest and was named Santa Cruz County Artist of the Year in 2016.
