Abstract:
Fred Bradford was a computer programmer and a longtime activist and advocate for the Asian American LGBTQ community. His collection, 1908-2019, is comprised of correspondence, personal and family papers, materials related to Asian Pacific Gays and Friends (APGF), ephemera, photographs, and computer disks.

Background

Scope and content:

The Fred Bradford collection is comprised largely of correspondence between Bradford and many of his family and friends. Other materials include administrative records from Asian Pacific Gays and Friends (formerly Asian Pacific Lesbians and Gays), family and personal papers, ephemera, photographs, and computer disks in several formats.

Biographical / historical:

Frederick Pomeroy Bradford, Jr. was born in 1944 in Ramsey, Minnesota. He attended Sibley High School in St. Paul and the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Bradford studied computer programming at the Control Data Institute and worked for early mainframe and supercomputer companies such as Control Data Corporation, United Computing Systems, and Digital Productions/Omnibus.

Bradford moved to the Los Angeles area in 1979. Through his connections in Los Angeles, Bradford became involved in several groups dedicated to the support of the Asian American community, particularly its LGBTQ community. He was a dedicated member of Asian Pacific Lesbians and Gays (later renamed Asian Pacific Gays and Friends) and served on boards for the Manzanar Committee, Asian Pacific Gays and Friends, and ONE Institute & Archives.

Bradford lived in Monterey Park, California, with his husband An Tieu.

Bradford died on November 15, 2023.
