Background

Scope and content:

Records of the Lionel CantĂș Queer Center at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Includes binders on program administration, curriculum development, reports, event flyers and posters, scrapbooks, collected feminist publications (circa 1970s), photographs (print and digital), and video tapes. Video formats include one 1/2'' open reel and three VHS tapes. Digital carrier formats include three CDs and three floppy disks.

Biographical / historical:

The Lionel CantĂș Queer Resource Center co-creates experiences with and for students, staff, and faculty to challenge cisheteronormative understandings of gender and sexuality.

The resource center is named after Lionel CantĂș, who was a beloved assistant professor of Sociology, an 'out' gay Latino man, who was exceptionally supportive of both graduate and undergraduate students. During his time at UCSC, his office at Merrill College was close to the GLBTI resource center, and Lionel was frequently visiting and making himself available for students and center programs. His sudden and untimely death in 2002 was a profound loss for the entire UCSC campus community. Two years after his death the GLBTI resource center was renamed in his memory.
