Scope and content:

The collection contains materials related to John Ungaretti (1950-1994), a man who came out in a letter in Time Magazine in 1969, and articles and related correspondence by his sister, Lorri Ungaretti. The collection includes the original 1969 letter and the Time Magazine issue featuring it. There is extensive correspondence from 1969 onwards, categorized by U.S. responses, foreign responses, "Shit Mail," and back and forth correspondence. The box contains journals and magazines with articles by John Ungaretti, such as the Journal of Homosexuality. Additionally, the collection includes a 2004 article by Lorri Ungaretti about John's 1969 coming out letter in Time Magazine and the responses it inspired. Finally, it includes numerous programs from AIDS Walk San Francisco from 1987 to 2002.

Biographical / historical:

John Ungaretti (1950-1994) was a San Francisco native known for his courageous public coming out in a 1969 letter to the editor of Time Magazine . He worked as an accountant at the University of California, San Francisco, and was passionate about music. Throughout his life, John corresponded extensively with readers who responded to his Time Magazine letter. He passed away from AIDS in 1994. He is survived by his sister, Lorri Ungaretti, who is an author who focuses on San Francisco history.
