    Biographical Note

Vitalliĭ (Vitaly) Shlykov was a Soviet military intelligence agent for the GRU (Glavnoe razvedyvatelʹnoe upravlenie); he operated abroad for most of his career.

    Scope and Content of Collection

This collection is composed of Vitaly V. Shlykov's memoirs, prepared for publication, but never published. There are two versions: one contains drafts of individual episodes, later transformed into a fuller draft. Shlykov describes his arrest in Switzerland in 1983, where he was jailed for a number of years for espionage. He returned to the USSR after his release in 1984, and continued to work as an analyst for the GRU, specializing in the military-industrial complexes of NATO countries. The typescript itself is unfinished and undated, although the last events the author describes relate to 1992 (as well as a footnote to a 1995 publication).
