Background

Scope and content:

The collection of correspondence covers William Carroll's life as an itinerant school teacher in Northern California, where he writes about the Chinese in California, flooding in Sacramento, and enslaved people; Americus D. Buck's service in Virginia during and immediately after the Civil War; Nathan Buck's service with a New York infantry regiment and the Siege of Petersburg; Edward H. Spencer's service as a Union soldier in South Carolina; and D. Carroll's service with a New York regiment. Topics include family matters, soldiers' everyday lives, and politics.

Biographical / historical:

The Saxton, Buck, and Carroll families, related by marriage, lived in central New York during the American Civil War. Nathan Buck served in a New York Infantry regiment attached to the 6th Army Corps and took part in the Siege of Petersburg. At the end of the Civil War, Americus D. Buck was a hospital steward with the 193rd Regiment of New York Infantry, which was organized in the spring of 1865 and was posted on duty in the Shenandoah and Department of West Virginia. His daughter Clarissa married Gates Saxton, a New York farmer, in 1864. William Carroll moved from Oswego County, New York, to California in 1860 and worked as a teacher in Northern California.
