Background

Scope and content:

This collection is organized into three series. Series 1 contains 26 large-bound scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings that Yosemite staff created from 1920-1938. Series 2 contains original newspaper clippings and some press releases dating from 1962-1987 that have been attached to paper (242 folders). Series 3 contains photocopies of the original clippings in series one and two (240 folders).

Biographical / historical:

Yosemite National Park staff began collecting newspaper articles about the park from local, regional, and national newspapers and placing them into scrapbooks beginning at least as early as 1920 in order to document the news coverage of park related events and issues. In the 1950s, methods of record keeping changed, and staff began arranging documents according to the new agency mandated alphanumerical filing system. Therefore, the newspaper clippings from 1962-1987 were no longer placed in bound scrapbooks, but rather affixed to paper and filed according to the new filing schema. From 1981 forward, the Media Affairs Office took over management of the news clippings, sending them to the Yosemite Research Librarian who added her articles and consolidated the collection. The reason for the gap in newspaper clippings from 1939-1961 is unknown.

Acquisition information:
Clippings pertaining to the park were clipped and maintained by Interpretive staff.
