Francis John Baptiste Romer, M.D., collected these materials to document the American Civil War, as he notes on a beginning leaf of the scrapbook. The scrapbook contains newspaper clippings from the Mobile Daily Mercury. One copy of Romer's "Loose Thoughts on the Philosophy of Matter and Motion" and one copy of his article in the New Orleans Medical and Surgical Journal are also found in the collection (see Box 1ov).
The loose newspaper clippings come from the Mobile Evening News, Mobile Daily Register, and the Mobile Daily Tribune. There are also newspaper fragments from the Times of London and other newspapers.
- Biographical / historical:

Francis John Baptiste Romer, M.D., was born in the French province of Alsace in 1812 and died in 1904, perhaps in Mobile, Alabama.
He emigrated to New Orleans in 1832 and took a medical degree there. He became the physician to Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama, circa 1860 and also served as the Surgeon and Botanist to the Confederate States. More details on his life can be found here.
