Abstract:
The Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center (PJTC) records document the history of the Jewish communities in the western San Gabriel Valley. The PJTC is an intergenerational congregation based in Pasadena, California. The collection includes, but is not limited to, PJTC newsletters, board minutes, ephemera, scripts of original musicals, yearbooks, membership directories, financial reports, booklets, photographs, video and audio recordings. Materials date from 1932 to 2019.

47 linear feet (46 record cartons and 1 oversize folder), 92 audiovisual carriers (3 unprocessed videocassettes, 89 unprocessed audiocassettes), and 509 born-digital carriers (1 unprocessed hard drive, 451 unprocessed optical discs, 57 unprocessed floppy disks)

Scope and content:

The Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center (PJTC) records document the history of the Jewish communities in the western San Gabriel Valley. The collection includes, but is not limited to, PJTC newsletters, board minutes, ephemera, scripts of original musicals, yearbooks, membership directories, financial reports, booklets, and photographs. In addition, the collection includes digitized documents, photographs, video and audio recordings of events and interviews. Materials date from 1932 to 2019.

Biographical / historical:

The Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center (PJTC) is an intergenerational congregation based in Pasadena, California. The history of the PJTC starts with the Temple B'nai Israel, established in 1921 in Pasadena, and its temple opened in 1923. In 1949, B'nai Israel was renamed the Pasadena Jewish Community under Rabbi Max Vorspan. In 1956, under the leadership of Rabbi Maurice Galpert, the temple became the Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center.

Collections are processed to a variety of levels depending on the work necessary to make them usable, their perceived user interest and research value, availability of staff and resources, and competing priorities. Library Special Collections provides a standard level of preservation and access for all collections and, when time and resources permit, conducts more intensive processing. These materials have been arranged and described according to national and local standards and best practices.
